I am getting a Biopsy: What can I expect?

You just found out you have to make a choice between several cervical biopsy methods.
I was sent four options....Am I a  doctor???? Well, I did the research... You're welcome!

🔹 1. Punch Biopsy

How to Prepare:

  • Schedule when not on your period if possible.

  • Avoid sex, douching, or vaginal products 24–48 hours before.

  • Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen an hour before for cramping relief.

🩺 What to Expect:

  • Done during a colposcopy in the doctor’s office.

  • May feel a sharp pinch or cramp.

  • Takes just a few minutes.

Recovery Time:

  • Mild spotting or discharge for 1–2 days.

  • Back to normal activities same day.

  • Avoid intercourse or tampons for a few days.

🔹 2. Endocervical Curettage (ECC)

How to Prepare:

  • Same as punch biopsy.

  • Empty bladder before the procedure.

  • Take a pain reliever ahead of time.

🩺 What to Expect:

  • Performed in-office with colposcopy.

  • Cramping during scraping of the cervical canal.

  • Quick, but slightly more uncomfortable than a punch biopsy.

Recovery Time:

  • Light bleeding or spotting for 1–3 days.

  • Return to normal activity within 24 hours.

  • Avoid tampons or sex for a few days.

🔹 3. Cone Biopsy (Conization)

How to Prepare:

  • Usually done under anesthesia (local or general).

  • Fasting may be required before the procedure.

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home.

🩺 What to Expect:

  • Done in a surgical setting (hospital or outpatient center).

  • Removes a larger, cone-shaped piece of cervical tissue.

  • May involve sutures or packing.

Recovery Time:

  • 2–4 weeks for full healing.

  • Cramping and moderate bleeding for several days.

  • No sex, tampons, or strenuous activity for at least 2–4 weeks.

🔹 4. LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)

How to Prepare:

  • Local anesthesia; no general anesthesia needed.

  • Eat normally but take it easy beforehand.

  • Wear a pad to the appointment (some bleeding expected).

🩺 What to Expect:

  • Performed in-office.

  • Mild burning smell from electrical loop.

  • Some cramping during and after.

Recovery Time:

  • Watery, pinkish discharge for 1–2 weeks.

  • Avoid sex, douching, and tampons for 4 weeks.

  • Most people return to work next day, but no heavy lifting.
